Salve your smile

Winter saps the air of moisture, which does a number on your skin and especially your lips, according to Lily Talakoub, a doctor at the Center for Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery (2311 M St. NW; 202-955-5757; Ctr4dermatology.com). The lips are not immune to freckling, wrinkles or skin cancer, either, says Talakoub. So, using a balm with a broad-spectrum SPF of at least 30 and minimal shimmer will help. Look for a balm with ingredients such as petrolatum, dimethicone or silicone that add moisture and prevent water loss, Talakoub says, but avoid formulations with lots of dyes and flavorings, which can be irritating. To get in top shape for that New Year's Eve smooch, try local manufacturer Skincando's (Skincando.com) Combat Ready Lip Balm ($10). It's made with cold-pressed apricot kernel oil, extra virgin coconut oil, purified beeswax from wild bees, fish oil, pharmaceutical-grade peppermint essential oils and grapefruit seed extract.

You do the match

Alexandria, Va: Do men's shoes and belts have to match? Should the shoes match the pants? Should socks match the pants?

Janet Bennett Kelly: Hi, Alexandria. Thanks for sending in those questions. According to my menswear sartorial advisers, shoes and belts should match and shoes should match the pants. However, you could take a page from David Beckham and choose a light-colored shoe with, say, navy pants. In business/conservative situations, the socks should be a close match to the pants or the shoes. In a more casual setting, express yourself and let the socks work as an accent to your pants/shoes.
