Schumann and Prokofiev in private

Two famous pieces of chamber music had their premieres on today's date, both at private readings prior to their first public performances.

On today's date in 1842, the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann arranged for a trial reading of his new Piano Quintet in E-flat at the Leipzig home of some of his friends. Schumann's wife, Clara, was to supposed to be the pianist on that occasion, but she took ill, and Schumann's friend and fellow-composer, Felix Mendelssohn stepped in at the last moment for the informal performance, reading the work at sight.

After this preliminary reading, Mendelssohn praised the work, but offered some friendly suggestion concerning part of the trio section in the new work's Scherzo movement, which prompted Schumann to write a livelier replacement movement for the work's first public performance.

About 100 years later, on today's date in 1949, a cello sonata by the Soviet composer Sergei Prokofiev received a similar, private performance in Moscow, for an invited audience at the House of the Union of Composers. Two of the leading Soviet performers of the day, cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and pianist Sviatoslav Richter, gave the work its first performance.

The following spring, it was again Rostropovich and Richter who gave the Sonata its public debut at the Moscow Conservatory.

St. Nicholas lived in the fourth century, and he was the archbishop of Myra in Lycia (which is now Turkey). There are all kinds of stories about him, but one of the most famous is that there was a poor man who could not afford a dowry for his three daughters, which meant they would have to be abandoned to prostitution. St. Nicholas didn't want to humiliate the man by giving him charity in public, so he left purses of gold in the man's house at night — according to one version of the story, he dropped them down the chimney, and in another, one of the daughters had set out her stockings to dry and the gold was put in them. And so St. Nicholas, the bringer of anonymous gifts, inspired Jolly Old St. Nick, Father Christmas, and Santa Claus. St. Nicholas Day is celebrated in many European countries and in American cities with German influence like Milwaukee, St. Louis, and Cincinnati. On the evening of November 5th, children put out their shoes, and on this morning, they wake up to find those shoes filled with small gifts from St. Nick — chocolates and cookies, fruit, marbles or other small toys. On this day, two major publications were first released: the Encyclopedia Britannica and The Washington Post. The Britannica was a product of the Scottish Enlightenment. The first installment came out on this day in 1768, and a new section was released every week, and it was finally completed in 1771 and was several thousand pages long. The entry for "woman," in its entirety, read: "'Female of Man' See HOMO." The Washington Post came out on this day in 1877. It was four pages long and each letter was typeset by hand. It cost three cents. It's the birthday of lyricist and composer Ira Gershwin, born Israel Gershowitz in New York City (1896). His father was a businessman, dabbling in everything from restaurants to pool parlors to cigar stores, and Ira said: "When my father sold a business and started another we could inevitably move to a new neighborhood. … My father loved to start businesses, but then he lost interest. He'd go and play pinochle and wouldn't supervise the latest venture." It's the birthday of diplomat and writer Baldassare Castiglione, (books by this author) born near Mantua, Italy (1478). He wrote poems, including love sonnets, but he is most famous for a book called Il Cortegiano (1528), or The Courtier, which described the ideal Renaissance nobleman. Castiglione based his observations on his many years as a courtier in the Court of Urbino, a court full of famous artists, writers, and intellectuals. He said that a courtier should have natural grace, intelligence, good looks, and noble birth; should be a skilled and brave fighter; not to mention have a thorough knowledge of art, literature, music, and philosophy. The book was translated into many languages, and it went through more than 100 editions. He wrote, "Therefore let the man we are seeking, be very bold, stern, and always among the first, where the enemy are to be seen; and in every other place, gentle, modest, reserved, above all things avoiding ostentation and that impudent self-praise by which men ever excite hatred and disgust in all who hear them." And it's the birthday of children's writer Susanna Moodie, (books by this author) born in Bungay, England (1803). She married an adventurous man who wanted to go settle in the wilderness of Canada, and so she went with him. She wrote about the hard life of the Canadian frontier in her memoirs, Roughing It in the Bush (1852) and Life in the Clearings Versus the Bush (1853), and novels like Flora Lyndsay (1854). Roughing It in the Bush has remained a classic and been called the Canadian version of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books. How to make money as a teen

There is a website called Cashlagoon.com where kids can easily make money by doing simple tasks such as looking at websites and doing surveys. With a PayPal account, kids can receive their money online and shop online. It is a really simple website where you can make a couple of bucks in about half an hour. In a couple of days, they can have enough money to buy a movie ticket online. In addition, you can refer other people and receive part of their earnings just for referring them. It's a fast and simple method of making pocket cash an hour a day.

Also, there is a website called Freelancer. There, kids can do several tasks such as write articles for several people and gain couple of dollars per article. There are many tasks and projects to complete, and the money can also be paid through PayPal. It is a great website, simple to use and there are millions projects to choose from. The revenue can be great for kids, if they put a little bit of effort into it.

What makes blogs a hit is the fact that they can be used to express one's thoughts and ideas while actually gaining money. however, the question for those who are new to the concept remains - how do you make money from blogging?

First things first, get our own blog. This is very easy as there are a lot of free blog providers out there. Although you may actually get your own domain and web host, that's usually not necessary unless you have a business. But if blogging is your business, better go for free. Then the only capital you need are your posts and a few seo tricks.

Of course, when you have a blog, you need something to write in it and that means you need to decide on a topic. If you want your blog to work, you need to stick to this topic because will be your niche which will soon be generating income for you. It pays to stick to just one point of interest because this is a good way to establish your online presence as an expert on something. Hence, you gain more credibility.

As a consequence of the global financial crisis last year, many people were unfortunately laid off and were without a steady stream of income. Although the income isn't enough to pay the bills and put food on the table, it can certainly come in handy. So if you want to make money online now, try the websites I recommend below.

The first website that I stumbled upon was aptly named 'mylot'. Now this website is great for people who love posting on web forums and socialising on Facebook and other social networking sites. Mylot will pay for you to post discussions and when you respond to discussions posted by others. The website is easy to navigate, and once you've signed up as a mylot member all that is left is to type a way with quality reasonably long responses to discussions. The website uses an algorithm to calculate how much your responses are worth, anything from half a cent to three cents can be earned from a single post. Although this doesn't sound like much, it can add up and you can make new friends during the process. You can be more successful if you divert most of your time from Facebook and other forums into mylot. Payment is made through your PayPal account.

Another form of making money online is through writing articles. Draw on your mini journalist/writer inside of you, and write quality articles about topics ranging from a movie that you recently saw to advice on relationships. I recommend Buksia, Associated Content and InfoBarrel. These websites pay approximately $1.50 per thousand views. You'd be surprised how quickly this happens, although this depends on the popularity of the topics you write about and your writing quality as depicted by your rating. As your rating voted by your fellow writers goes up, so does your income per thousand views.

The third form of making money online is through websites like eBay or Amazon. This avenue of making money online is more profitable than the other options I have mentioned. However, with more monetary gains comes higher risk. Some popular items like Ipods etc are sold fast, with a lower profit margin, whilst long play records sell slowly but often with higher profit margins. Therefore, one needs to manage their inventory closely.

In order to make money online now all that is required is persistence, effort and great time management skills. If you leave a few hours of your busy lives and persist at these avenues, you can make a few extra dollars a week that can be used to pay for new clothes, chip into that god forsaken credit card bill or put towards your dream holiday.
