THURSDAY: EPA to Present National Environmental Justice Achievement Award in Charleston, S.C.

(ATLANTA – Dec. 15, 2009) On Thursday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will present a national Environmental Justice Achievement Award to a partnership in Charleston, S.C.  The awards recognize partnerships for their distinguished accomplishments in addressing environmental justice issues, emphasizing collaborative work in communities disproportionately exposed to environmental and human health risks.

                        Kent Benjamin; EPA Associate Director for Environmental Justice;

Mayor R. Keith Summey, City of North Charleston;

Michael Brown, Councilman, City of North Charleston;

Daphne Neel, Chief, Bureau of Land and Waste Management, SC Department of Health and Environmental Control;

Rahim Karriem, Acting President, Lowcountry Alliance for Model Communities;

Wannetta Mallette, Chair, Mitigation Agreement Commission;

John F. Hassell, III, State Ports Authority Board Secretary; and

Herb Fraser Rahim, Union Heights neighborhood representative
