Buys in the hoods

Neighborhood to neighborhood, the Washington-area's chock full of options for gift-giving. Pop into shops along Georgetown's cobblestone streets for classy finds like Teroforma's Whisky Lovers set, a pair of slinky, mouth-blown tumblers and six soapstones that ingeniously chill your dram of choice without watering it down ($70, Proper Topper, 3213 P St. NW; 202-333-6200). Pick up a Prova vintage-silk scarf -- made by a former Vogue editor and worn by the current first lady -- these are the "It Girl" presents of the season ($395, Barneys Co-op, 5471 Wisconsin Ave., Chevy Chase; 301-634-4061). And score stylish crafts in Old Town Alexandria, like Cate & Levi's stuffed monkeys (and frogs and bunnies) -- the one-of-a-kind creations are handmade from reclaimed wool ($100, Pink & Brown, 1212 King St., Alexandria; 703- 684-1050).

Style for all seasons

Shorts in the Winter?: I bought a pair of wool shorts at Gap. I'm definitely not stick thin (more of an hour glass figure). How should I wear them? Thanks!

Holly Thomas: These could be cute with a cozy knit sweater, opaque tights and knee-high flat boots. Just be sure to experiment with the proportions to make sure they don't end up looking a bit dowdy.
